Alright team, we’re going to mix it up a little up this week. We don’t have the courts reserved, but we are going to have practice anyway because the courts are supposed to be open for badminton open play use. We only have the courts from 9AM until 12PM, so PLEASE be on time/early.

We are also introducing a new structure to practice: splitting up the practice by skill level. Here’s the schedule:

8:30 to 9:00 – Advanced players get to courts, warm up.
9:00 to 10:00 – Advanced players train
10:00 to 10:30 – Beginner Players get to courts, warm up.
10:30 to 11:30 – Beginner Players train; Advanced players play games
11:30-12:00 – Everyone plays games

A separate email with who we recommend for each category will be sent to the team.

Of course, beginner players are welcome to come early and play games or warm up if there is room.

See you Sunday!

The MIT Team Tournament will take place this Saturday and Sunday in Rockwell Cage. That means that there will be no regular practice, but all team members are encouraged to come watch!!

Dates: Saturday October 3rd 8.30 am – 9.00 pm | Sunday October 4th 9.00 am – 5.00 pm

Venue: Rockwell Cage, M.I.T., Vassar Street, Cambridge, MA 02139

Participants:

TEAM-TEAM CAPTAIN

Boston Metro – Neil Davies
Cornell University – Mike Hsu
D.C. – Amy Nguy
Maugus – Andy Choong
M. I. T. – Heymian Wong (WOOOH!!!)
University of Montreal – Jean-Robert Quevillon
New York – Chibing Wu
Northeast Juniors – Kirill Boyarin and Bob Malaythong

Format: The eight teams will start off in two groups of four. Each team will play each of the other three teams in their group on the first day (Saturday). On the second day (Sunday), the first place teams in each group will play the team finishing second in the other group, with the winning teams from these semi-finals progressing to the grand final and the two losing teams playing off against each other for third place. The teams finishing third and fourth in their groups on the Saturday will play off similarly against the corresponding teams in the other group on the Sunday. Thus each of the eight teams will play three ties on Saturday and two ties on Sunday.

Each encounter (tie) between two teams will consist of the following: Two Mens Singles, one Ladies Singles, three Mens Doubles, two Ladies Doubles, and three Mixed Doubles, giving a total of eleven matches per tie. Each match will be the best of three games to twenty one points with rally-point scoring. The winner of each tie will be the team winning the most number of matches. For example, if in the tie between teams A and B, team A wins both the Mens Singles and the Ladies Singles, and team B wins two of the three Mens Doubles, one of the two Ladies Doubles and all three Mixed Doubles, then team B would win the tie by a score of 6-5. All eleven matches in a tie will be played during the Round Robin phase of the tournament. The final group positions will be decided by the number of ties won by each team. If two teams have the same record, then their relative positions will be decided by the result of the tie between those two teams.

In each tie a player may play a maximum of two matches (one singles and one doubles, one doubles and one mixed, or one singles and one mixed). Thus the minimum number of players required on each team is six men and four women. There is no restriction as to the maximum number of players required on the roster, but we suggest no more than ten men and eight ladies in order that everyone gets a reasonable amount of play. All players on the team roster should have a bona fide connection or affiliation to that team. However, each team may include one “guest” player on their roster who does not otherwise have any connection or affiliation to the defining identity of the team.

Before each tie commences, each team captain will complete a match sheet detailing which players will be playing which matches in that tie for their team. Of the two men selected to play the Mens Singles matches, the stronger of the two must play the 1st Mens Singles match and the weaker of the two must play the 2nd Mens Singles match. Similarly for the Ladies Doubles, Mens Doubles and Mixed Doubles matches (in the latter two cases, the weakest of the three pairs selected must play in the number 3 position). The relative rankings of players/pairs must be self-consistent from tie-to-tie and a provisional rankings list will be completed by the team captain in advance of the tournament. The match sheets will be approved by the Tournament Referee before play in the tie commences. The captain may select the same team or a different team from the roster for each tie.
