Summer Schedule Change

The schedule posted on our schedule page is still accurate. The times listed for open badminton at http://web.mit.edu/athletics/www/recschedule.pdf
are in addition to our previously scheduled times.

We will keep you up to date as to any other schedule changes imposed by DAPER.

Yes, you can play!

Everyone, in response to the many inquiries we’ve received regarding whether those not affiliated with MIT can play with the team, the answer is: Yes You Can!

Partisan politics aside, anyone from the MIT community or outside may play during the normally scheduled club court times, provided they have a membership to MIT’s Zesiger Center sports complex. Details on membership can be found at http://mitrecsports.com/membership-pass-types/default.aspx

However, practices for the intercollegiate team are only open to current MIT students. Those times are typically 10-12 AM on Sunday mornings, during the school year only.

Boston Open Pictures/Article

Fred Coleman over at USA Badminton writes:

“The crowd roared and rose to applaud as the “local” boys finished with a striking comeback. At the Boston Open, a US tournament 2nd only to the US Open in prize money and international flavor, the finals are usually filled with players from outside the US, or those international players who have come to live, play and coach with us and have so enriched USA Badminton. 2009 was no exception. In Men’s Singles, Hok Hai Lee (Malaysia) defeated JBS Vidyadhar (India) 21-15, 21-18. Women’s singles – Mona Santoso (Indonesia) defeated Nicole Grether (Germany) 21-14, 21-16. In Women’s Doubles – Joo Hyun Lee/Mona Santoso (Korea/Indonesia) defeated Ying Chen/Yun Peng (China) 21-16, 22-20. In Mixed Doubles – Chandra Kowi/Mona Santoso (Indonesia) defeated Halim Haryanto Ho/Yun Peng (Indonesia/China) 21-19, 21-17 and retained the trophy after 3 straight wins in mixed doubles and Mona’s completion of a Triple Crown.

But, the crowd was electrified and on their feet for the Men’s doubles final. This was not because the other matches were anything but great badminton – they were excellent and well appreciated. It was not because men’s doubles is often a highlight final, although it was. No, the crowd response was because this year’s match of Sameera Gunatileka and Vincent Nguy (1st seed) against Daniel Gouw and Chandra Kowi (2nd seed) showed exactly what is right about US Badminton…”

Summer Schedule Updated

The reservations for the summer period (from late May until September 2009) are now updated on the website.  Check it out on the schedule page.  In general, we booked every available Sunday afternoon, Tuesday evening, and Friday evening.

All summer reservations are open to the entire community.  There will be no coaching for club members.  As always, please put away the poles/nets and pick up any used shuttles once you are done.

Coaching and Equipment

Whether you’re looking for that impossible-to-find perfect racket from your youth or the latest $200 Yonex shoes, complete with jump jets and “nano-arcrazorfoam” (don’t laugh – it could happen), you’re likely to find what you’re looking for at the “Supplies” page, under Links/Resources.

If you’re reading this and you’re a vendor or a coach looking for students, we’d be happy to post a link with your contact information and a short blurb about your services. Unfortunately, we can’t post detailed advertisements or endorse one company over another. If you are interested in an official sponsorship or want to donate to the club, please use the contact form on the contact info page.
